Sculptor, medalist and engraver, he left for Paris at age 19 in August 1900. Ali was employed in the workshop of M. Fleuret, who was the first workshop of chasing that city, directed by Eugène Doumenc, which became famous Arts and crafts .
John Smith studied at the School of Decorative Arts of Geneva, where he enlisted the help of Antonio Arroyo who provided him

His work includes, besides many busts, medals, small animalistic art pieces and varied works of Goldsmith, the following monuments: the dead of the First World War in Pouliguen (France); Evora and Valenca do Minho; Augusto Gil in the Guard; Júlio Dinis in Porto; Sousa Lara in Angola, in Rio de Janeiro (Itamaraty Palace) and allegory to the diplomatic action of the Baron of Rio Branco, among others.
