The Manuel Duarte Successors is a family business established for over 80 years , with the aim of promoting religious medals in gold and silver exclusive Sculptors Masters. Sculptor, medalist and engraver, he left for Paris at age 19 in August 1900. Ali was employed in the workshop of M. Fleuret, who was the first workshop of chasing that city, directed by Eugène Doumenc, which became famous Arts and crafts .

John Smith studied at the School of Decorative Arts of Geneva, where he enlisted the help of Antonio Arroyo who provided him
three letters of introduction, a scholarship for three years, time seemed necessary to take the course of 5, lead a good preparation for Paris. At the end of a year's work in school administration council allowed him to compete for the registration of four years, with the number one ranking in all disciplines.

After the course the following year (1903) with the highest rating, required to pass the rest of the bag to Paris, there to attend the School of Fine Arts. Chaplain was the best workshop of the student, with a number of classification that year and the next.

Back in Portugal in 1906, from 1909 to 1914 he was part, by contract, the faculty of the School Marquis of Pombal. Not wanting in May 1914 to renew the contract, nor hold office Drawing and Modeling Professor, for what it was ranked number one in open, he took up residence in Paris, where returned to Portugal in 1932.

His work includes, besides many busts, medals, small animalistic art pieces and varied works of Goldsmith, the following monuments: the dead of the First World War in Pouliguen (France); Evora and Valenca do Minho; Augusto Gil in the Guard; Júlio Dinis in Porto; Sousa Lara in Angola, in Rio de Janeiro (Itamaraty Palace) and allegory to the diplomatic action of the Baron of Rio Branco, among others.
